Born from a Tree
Traditional Daqi begins not with synthetic paint, but with the natural sap of the lacquer tree.
The sap is traditionally harvested from carefully cut grooves in the tree and then refined before it reaches the artisan’s hands.
Through repeated application, curing, sanding, and polishing, this natural plant-derived material gradually develops into a smooth, durable surface with remarkable visual depth and a distinctive natural luster.
This is why traditional Chinese lacquer should not be confused with ordinary paint or a simple surface coating.
It begins with a tree.
It is transformed by human hands.
And it takes time.
More Than 90 Days to Complete
Traditional lacquerwork cannot be rushed.
Each DAQIRA lacquer bead requires more than 90 days to complete.
A thin layer of natural lacquer is carefully applied by hand. The piece is then placed in a shaded environment and allowed to cure naturally.
Only after the lacquer has properly cured can the artisan begin sanding and refining the surface.
Then another layer is applied.
And the process begins again.
Lacquer.
Cure.
Sand.
Refine.
Repeat.
This cycle is repeated again and again over many weeks.
Every layer must be given sufficient time to cure before the next layer can be added. Every sanding stage must be carefully controlled so the artisan refines the surface without destroying the depth created underneath.
Only after the final stages of polishing does the lacquer reveal its characteristic depth and glass-like luster.
It is not simply painted.
It is built, layer by layer, over more than 90 days.
Precious Materials Beneath the Surface
Traditional Chinese lacquer art has long been combined with decorative materials that catch and reflect light beneath layers of lacquer.
Depending on the design, selected DAQIRA beads may incorporate materials such as:
- Mother-of-pearl
- Abalone shell
- Natural shell fragments
- Agate
- Gold leaf
These materials may be embedded, layered, or incorporated into the decorative surface before additional lacquer and polishing stages are completed.
As light moves across the earrings, tiny fragments may reveal flashes of color, iridescence, metallic warmth, and mineral-like depth.
Because every design is individually composed, decorative materials vary from bead to bead. Not every bead contains every material listed above.
