Wear 7,000 Years of Chinese Craftsmanship

More than a pair of earrings, this is a piece of living Chinese craft history.

Daqi, traditional Chinese natural lacquer, is one of China’s oldest artistic traditions. Chinese lacquer craftsmanship can be traced back more than 7,000 years, with origins reaching into the Neolithic period.

Across generations, artisans transformed natural materials into richly layered works of art through patience, precision, and extraordinary handwork. Finely crafted lacquer objects were historically treasured in imperial courts and elite households for their depth, beauty, durability, and unmistakable luster.

Today, DAQIRA carries this ancient tradition forward in a form made to be worn.

Each pair of earrings represents a meeting point between nature, time, craftsmanship, and contemporary jewelry.

Born from a Tree

Traditional Daqi begins not with synthetic paint, but with the natural sap of the lacquer tree.

The sap is traditionally harvested from carefully cut grooves in the tree and then refined before it reaches the artisan’s hands.

Through repeated application, curing, sanding, and polishing, this natural plant-derived material gradually develops into a smooth, durable surface with remarkable visual depth and a distinctive natural luster.

This is why traditional Chinese lacquer should not be confused with ordinary paint or a simple surface coating.

It begins with a tree.
It is transformed by human hands.
And it takes time.

More Than 90 Days to Complete

Traditional lacquerwork cannot be rushed.

Each DAQIRA lacquer bead requires more than 90 days to complete.

A thin layer of natural lacquer is carefully applied by hand. The piece is then placed in a shaded environment and allowed to cure naturally.

Only after the lacquer has properly cured can the artisan begin sanding and refining the surface.

Then another layer is applied.

And the process begins again.

Lacquer.
Cure.
Sand.
Refine.
Repeat.

This cycle is repeated again and again over many weeks.

Every layer must be given sufficient time to cure before the next layer can be added. Every sanding stage must be carefully controlled so the artisan refines the surface without destroying the depth created underneath.

Only after the final stages of polishing does the lacquer reveal its characteristic depth and glass-like luster.

It is not simply painted.

It is built, layer by layer, over more than 90 days.

Precious Materials Beneath the Surface

Traditional Chinese lacquer art has long been combined with decorative materials that catch and reflect light beneath layers of lacquer.

Depending on the design, selected DAQIRA beads may incorporate materials such as:

  • Mother-of-pearl
  • Abalone shell
  • Natural shell fragments
  • Agate
  • Gold leaf

These materials may be embedded, layered, or incorporated into the decorative surface before additional lacquer and polishing stages are completed.

As light moves across the earrings, tiny fragments may reveal flashes of color, iridescence, metallic warmth, and mineral-like depth.

Because every design is individually composed, decorative materials vary from bead to bead. Not every bead contains every material listed above.

This variation is part of the character of handcrafted Daqi jewelry.

No Two Beads Are Ever Exactly the Same

Look closely at each bead and you may discover flowing veins, tiny islands of color, shimmering shell, metallic accents, mineral-like textures, or patterns that resemble clouds, rivers, stone, and distant landscapes.

These variations are not imperfections.

They are the signature of the handmade process.

Because each bead passes through repeated cycles of lacquering, curing, sanding, decorating, and polishing, its final pattern develops its own individual character.

Even the two beads within the same pair of earrings will never be perfectly identical. Each pair is selected to complement one another in color and overall character while preserving the natural individuality of the handcrafted pattern.

Your pair is uniquely yours.

A Symbol of Good Fortune

For centuries, Chinese decorative arts have carried wishes of good fortune, prosperity, longevity, harmony, and renewal.

Colors, materials, patterns, flowers, animals, and decorative motifs were often chosen not only for beauty, but also for the meanings and wishes they represented.

DAQIRA continues that tradition in a contemporary form.

The flowing patterns of each bead can become a personal symbol of change, balance, growth, renewal, and transformation.

Wear them at the beginning of a new journey.

Wear them to mark an important milestone.

Or simply wear them as a reminder to move forward with intention.

We do not promise that a pair of earrings can change your destiny.

But throughout human history, meaningful objects have helped people remember what they value, what they hope for, and where they want to go next.

Sometimes a talisman does not create the journey.
It simply reminds you why you began it.

Made Slowly for Those Who Value Meaning

These are not ordinary mass-produced earrings designed to look identical.

They are not simply another pair of beaded earrings.

They are a meeting point between:

Natural materials.
7,000 years of Chinese lacquer tradition.
More than 90 days of craftsmanship.
Repeated hand lacquering and polishing.
Precious decorative materials.
And contemporary wearable art.

A single lacquer bead may pass through countless stages before it reaches its final form:

Lacquering → Shade Curing → Sanding → Decorating → Lacquering Again → Refining → Polishing

The result cannot be rushed.

And it cannot be made exactly the same twice.

Wear them for the craftsmanship.
Wear them for the history.
Wear them for their symbolism.
Or simply wear them because no other pair will ever look exactly like yours.
